The Panther wrestling program took three wrestlers this past weekend to the CHSAA State Wrestling Tournament. Nestor Torres and Kyon McDonald were in an elite group of wrestlers in the 4A classification. Both wrestled well but didn’t qualify for the metal rounds.
Nate Mesa 285 lb. classification is the first Panther wrestler since 2005 to wrestle on the the third day of the state tournament. Nate lost his second match of the tournament and had to battle back through the back side of the bracket. Nate won by pin in his third overall match Friday night which qualified him to compete on Saturday. On Saturday, Nate defeated the heavyweight from Thomas Jefferson and then the heavyweight from Skyline. These wins put him into the 3rd and 4th place match Saturday afternoon. In his final match Nate was matched against the Pueblo West heavyweight who he has wrestled twice before, losing early in the season and defeating the PW heavyweight at the regional. The match was hard fought and wrestled well by both competitors but in the end Nate came up a bit short placing him 4th in the state in class 4A.
Congratulations to Nate, Kyon and Nester. Also thank you to the great coaching staff who work diligently to prepare our wrestlers for competition all year long.
